Animal testing is sadly a very common form of everyday animal cruelty. One of the most common animal tests is called the Draize Eye Irritancy Test. The cosmetics industry and a variety of household products use it to test their products on animals. It has been in use since the 1940s. A solution is poured into the eyes of rabbits that are immobilized in stocks. Metal clips re sometimes used to keep their eyes open. The rabbits often will break their necks and backs in an attempt to get away because of the pain. They will be then observed for week or two to see how much damage has been done. Reactions range from irritation to ulcerations, bleeding and blindness. The animals aren’t given painkillers because they are said to interfere with the test. Then when the testing is all over the rabbits are killed. These tests are often not required by law and are actually used to protect the manufacturer, not the public.
Electrodes are also used in animal testing. Electrodes are implanted in the brains of animals such as monkeys and cats for psychological r behavioral tests to see if certain signals can cause certain behaviors. After the electrodes are implanted the animals will be put through a series of tests and then killed. Their brains will be studied to see what damage has been damage to the animals.
